 AMD 4700s DESKTOP KIT:

AMD has introduced a new desktop kit based on its Zen 2 architecture. The kit is particularly exciting because of its AMD 4700S, a processor from the Sony PlayStation 5.

The AMD 4700S has been available in China since April, as we reported at the time. Now, AMD also offers the strange chip in a mini-PC, having quietly listed the 4700S Desktop Kit on its website. The AMD 4700S Desktop Kit specifications confirm that the 4700S is an eight-core processor based on AMD's Zen 2 architecture, but there is no mention of clock speeds.

However, Geekbench listings confirm that the AMD 4700S has a 4.0 GHz boost clock, 8 MB of L3 cache and 16 GB of RAM. Incidentally, a CPU-Z listing confirms that the AMD 4700S is an SoC from the PlayStation 5, albeit without its integrated GPU enabled. Presumably, AMD has released the 4700S to clear stock of defective chips that it could not use in Sony's latest console.

The AMD 4700S Desktop Kit also has a PCIe x16 slot, albeit one that AMD has restricted to PCIe 2.0 x4. Hence, you can only use the 4700S with older or less powerful graphics cards, including the Radeon RX 590 and the GeForce GTX 1060.

The mini-ITX form factor board has eight USB Type-A ports too, three of which support the fast USB 3.2 Gen2 standard. There is also a Gigabit LAN connection and an HD Audio header, but no M.2 slots. Instead, the AMD 4700S Desktop Kit relies on two SATA ports for connecting drives. Unfortunately, AMD is yet to reveal how much the 4700S Desktop Kit will cost or when it will be available.
